Cryptotia is rare in Caucasians but more common in Orientals, particularly in Japanese people, where the incidence has been reported as 1:400. The upper pole of the ear cartilage is buried beneath the skin of the scalp and the auriculocephalic sulcus is obliterated. In addition, there is often a deformity of the antihelix, especially its superior crus.
The principles of the surgical correction are the coverage of skin deficit and the correction of deformed cartilage, if needed.
For the correction of cryptotia, we adopted modified Onizuka¡¯s method to avoid the handicaps of Onizuka¡¯s method i.e. the disturbance of hairline and the deficient auriculocephalic sulcus. Our method is that wide rotation flap with Z-plasty is used to cover the skin defect and Onizuka¡¯s conchal cartilage graft is employed to repair the cartilage deformity.
Six patients with cryptotia were treated with this technique, and good postoperative results were achieved. We concluded that modified Onizuka¡¯s method has following merits.
1.The design is simple and the procedure easy
2.The required depth of the auriculocephalic sulcus is achieved.
3.The hairline is not disturbed by the operation
4.There is no need for additional skin grafting
5.The scar behind the auricle is not visible
